Letter to the Editor

I'm part of a small group of people who recently started a RESULTS group in Dallas to address global issues of poverty and hunger. We're a grass-roots political activism group that has both domestic and global branches. We have a very small group in Washington with their finger on the pulse and we have a conference call once a month to learn about different topics. These conference calls typically involve an individual who is an expert on the current topic and RESULTS has been able to get some great people on the calls. Muhammad Yunus, founder of the Grameen Bank and winner of the Nobel Peace Prize, is on the RESULTS board of directors and has been a guest speaker on calls before. It's amazing to me that I have a chance to ask questions of someone who has done so much to help people pull themselves out of poverty!

Anyway, I wrote my first letter to the editor last week about Universal Primary Education. Did you realize that more children are OUT of school in Africa than IN school??? The schools involve fees and uniforms and so many children just can't afford to go. In areas where fees have been removed, children flock to the schools and, over time, the whole area begins to rise out of poverty. It's not a guaruntee, but education is the basis of economic stability.

My letter to the editor of the Dallas Morning News was published on June 1st. They made a few editing errors which frustrated me, but overall I was happy with the message of the piece.


FYI, the final paragraph should say "0.4%". Less than half a percent!!!
